A man from Preston has been convicted on two charges of of damaging or destroying the sites of protected species of bats. The site had been surveyed in 2007 and both brown long eared bats and lesser horseshoe bats had been recorded on the development site.
Mr Ayob Bailok a solicitor from Preston in Lancashire had initially denied the charges which related to demolition work at the North Wales Hospital site in Denbigh. But after a two day trial it emerged that work which should have been carried out under the terms of a European protected species licence (bat licence) had not been carried out.
After the trial at Prestatyn Magistrates Court he was given a six month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £2000 costs.
