Toby Hart, UES’ Managing Director, is one of a few registered consultants with Natural England in the north west that is able to register sites under the Bat Mitigation Class Licence (BMCL). The BMCl was brought into effect in order to streamline the licensing process for bat roosts of low conservation status and provides an alternative to the usual route of applying for a European Protected Species Mitigation Licence.
UES can work with work with other ecological consultants and register sites for the BMCL if it satisfies Natural England’s criteria, even if we do not conduct the initial bat presence / absence surveys. In this case, the client wished to develop a residential property in Stockport, Greater Manchester. However, the property was found to contain a day roost of a single common pipistrelle following the initial bat inspection surveys, which were carried out by another bat consultant. In order to expedite the licensing process for their client, this consultant worked with us to register the site for the BMCL, since this consultant was not registered to do so on their own.
UES successfully applied for the BMCL and carried out the works in September 2019.
