UES are a leading independent ecological consultancy operating throughout the UK. We specialise in managing large complex projects, where ecological issues can pose significant risks to development timelines and budgets.

We provide a comprehensive ecology service, from baseline surveys to impact assessments, habitat creation and management, and expert witness advice. Our ecologists are experienced in surveying, licensing, and mitigating for a wide range of protected species and habitats.

Our client base includes developers, planners, architects, engineers, homeowners and local planning authorities, mostly as a result of repeat business and recommendations.

We’ve got the knowledge and skills you need to meet your legislative, planning and contractual requirements, without spending more than you need to.

Our ecologists are licenced by Natural England, Natural Resources Wales and Nature Scot to survey for bats and great crested newts, meaning we are legally allowed to disturb and handle these species.

UES’ Managing Director, Toby Hart, is a registered consultant of Natural England’s Bat Mitigation Class Licence (BMCL). This allows us to deliver a quicker and cheaper licensing service on certain projects where the conservation importance of the roost is low.

Our ecologists are members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM), who promote the highest standards of practice through a professional code of conduct and continuing professional development (CPD).

Our ecologists are also certified by Botanical Society of Britain & Ireland (BSBI) to undertake preliminary ecological appraisals (aka phase 1 habitat surveys), as well as more complex botanical surveys.

Other qualifications held in-house include:

  • CS38 certified tree climber
  • SHEA gas passport for operations on gas industry sites
  • Personal track safety (PTS) card for working on railway lines
  • CSCS operatives card for work on a construction site
  • PA6 qualification for hand held applications of pesticide

James Latham Principal Ecologist Biocensus
UES have formed part of Biocensus’ survey team working on the High Speed 2 (HS2) project for over a year. In this role, UES have been responsible for carrying out a wide variety of ecological surveys plus associated reporting. Their ability to react quickly to changing priorities and resource requirements has been particularly helpful on a project as dynamic and fast-paced as HS2. They have also been proactive in helping to solve problems, and have set up clear lines of communication with Biocensus. This has helped to improve the flow of information between the two organisations and our client. We hope to build on our strong working relationship with UES through further work on HS2 and other projects.
Martin Burton Contracts Manager Kier Construction
UES have provided ecological surveys and advice to Kier Construction Central throughout the delivery of 6 new schools in Nottinghamshire constructed under the government’s Priority Schools Building Programme. This batch of schools has been highlighted by the Education Funding Agency as an exemplar for successful delivery under the PSBP programme and UES were a key member of the team. They have been professional and proactive throughout and I will have no hesitation in using them again in the future.
Jonathan Ashcroft Projects Director Muse Developments
Muse have had the pleasure in working with UES on a number of our developments. We have been able to rely on their professional and proactive approach in dealing with sensitive ecological and planning issues on both Brownfield and Greenfield developments. UES have consistently demonstrated a real understanding and commitment to the long term success of the developments we have worked together on. I would have no hesitation in recommending UES as a prospective ecological consultant.
Richard Purser Associate Director DPP UK Ltd
UES' expertise has been instrumental in helping us to secure planning permission on a number of ecologically sensitive sites. Their proactive approach within the design team and with statutory bodies has ensured that all legal and planning obligations, with regards to ecology, have been achieved.
Phil Dolan Managing Director Anwyl Land
We have engaged the services of UES on several sites now and have been extremely impressed with their professionalism and ability to turn surveys and reports round in a demanding timescale. Their knowledge and experience is extensive which gives us the confidence to continually use their services for all things ecology.
Shaun Regan SHE Advisor Fastflow Energy
